TL;DR: Key Insights

Build People

Real leadership in engineering means building people, not just systems.

Innovation Mindset

Stop chasing innovation as an outcome; build it as a mindset.

Integrity Matters

Sustainable success requires innovation with integrity and long-term vision.

Vision & Determination

Determination and vision matter more than resources. Start small, think big.

When I launched Saudi Controls in the early 1980s, automation wasn't just uncommon in our region. It was practically unheard of. We were pioneering a field that many didn't yet understand, using limited resources to build a foundation for the future of our nation's industry.

That journey taught me something most business books won't tell you: technology doesn't transform industries. People do. Over three decades, I've built organizations, navigated market shifts, and watched the Middle East's technological landscape evolve from basic automation to integrated smart systems.

"Innovation isn't something you achieve. It's something you practice every day."

What Leadership in Engineering Really Means

Most people think engineering leadership is about technical expertise. While competence is the entry price, true leadership is about the ability to align technical potential with human aspiration. It's about building teams that feel empowered to solve complex problems with integrity.

Leadership is the bridge that turns abstract technology into meaningful human progress.

The Three Pillars I've Relied On

1. Tools, Not Solutions

Technical capability alone doesn't create results. It's how people use the tools that matters.

2. Sustainability

Lasting organizations are built on sustainable practices and long-term culture.

3. Integrity

Reflect on whether innovation genuinely serves people and society.

The Early Days: Building Saudi Controls

We were competing against international firms with larger budgets and established names. But we had something they didn't: local context and a relentless drive to prove that we could build world-class systems right here in Saudi Arabia.

The lesson: Resources matter less than clarity of vision and determination.

Evolving from Saudi Controls to Datastar

Datastar represented a shift toward full business technology integration. We realized that for automation to be truly effective, it had to be part of a larger digital transformation strategy.

"We shifted from hierarchy to collaboration, fostering a culture of continuous learning where success is measured beyond just revenue."

  • Collaboration: Breaking silos to let engineering and business functions merge.
  • Culture: Investing in people's growth as much as the company's growth.
  • Value: Focus on solving real-world problems over implementing trendy tech.

Practical Leadership Lessons

Start with Why

Never implement technology for the sake of it. Understand the core purpose.

Invest in People

Systems can be replicated; culture and talent cannot.

Honest Dialogue

Create space where teams can challenge ideas and admit mistakes.

Business Acumen

Technical excellence must be paired with an understanding of business value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Conclusion: The One Thing That Matters Most

Tools evolve, but it's leadership, collaboration, and curiosity that drive real change. As you navigate your own professional journey, remember that the most valuable thing you can build is not a system, but a person.

True impact lives at the intersection of technology, people, and leadership.
